Finasteride-Side-Effects

Finasteride is the substance in the brand name Proscar or Propecia but it can be found in numerous other brands. Finasteride is an orally active medication that is known as a 5 alpha-reductase inhibitor. It is known to suppress the conversion of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT) and therefore lower total levels of DHT hormone in the body.

Finasteride was FDA approved back in the 1990s for the purpose of treating Benign Prostate Hyperplasia (BPH) – the condition of prostate enlargement in males. Later was approved for the purpose of treating androgenic alopecia – the condition of male pattern hair loss.

Anabolic steroid users like bodybuilders and various other athletes are using Finasteride mostly for preventing hair loss. That’s because all steroids are known to speed up the hair loss process because they are boosting testosterone levels. And a part of testosterone (normally 5% of testosterone) converts into DHT. That’s even more of a risk when running DHT derived steroids like Winstrol (Stanozolol), Anadrol (Oxymetholone), and others as they would directly increase levels of DHT.

But dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is known as the main culprit of head hair follicles. Therefore, high DHT usually leads to hair loss.

However, before running Finasteride for the purpose of preventing hair loss, it is extremely important to know that Finasteride side effects can be really nasty. You should be prepared for them.

Side Effects of Finasteride

When you use Finasteride, serum DHT levels drop. But that’s a very important hormone for a man. Therefore, you may experience some side effects like:

  • Drastic decrease in libido (no sex drive)
  • Erectile dysfunction (ED) – inability to reach and/or maintain an erection
  • Impotence altogether
  • May lose muscle mass and strength levels
  • Affects you psychologically so may lead to mood swings, depression, etc.

More about Finasteride Side Effects

Is recommended to start using Finasteride only when that’s absolutely necessary. Preferably to talk with a doctor. That’s because there are situations when men have developed long lasting side effects from using Finasteride only for a short period of time. DHT is a very powerful hormone and reducing it may not be the best idea.

That’s why Finasteride side effects should not be taken lightly – they can be very serious, brutal, and long lasting!

In fact, that’s something pretty obvious taken into consideration that you are inhibiting the powerful androgen hormone DHT. It may not be a good idea for males because DHT is responsible for maintaining normal male secondary sex characteristics as well as sexual function. That’s why so many Finasteride side effects are associated with the sexual function of a man.

Plus, it should be mentioned that Finasteride is not affecting any other hormones. It does not interact with the androgen or estrogen receptors, is not anti androgenic or anti estrogenic, nor it has estrogenic or androgenic effects. It has no effect on other hormones such as thyroid hormones, LH (Luteinizing Hormone) or FSH (Follicle Stimulating Hormone), cortisol, or others.

Yet, in some situations, Finasteride is still sometimes associated with gynecomastia side effects.

That’s because there are studies that prove that strong androgens are actually working as anti estrogens in the body. And DHT is a powerful androgen. With this being said, when the DHT levels are reduced, then estrogen hormone levels may sometimes go in the upper range.

That’s why there are males reporting sometimes high estrogen related issues like gynecomastia, water retention, and others.

In the end, the most common side effects are associated with erectile dysfunction, impotence, and decreased libido. Almost 1 in 10 males report this side effect from using Finasteride.

Finasteride Administration

Most commonly, Finasteride comes in tablets of either 5 mg or 1 mg.

  • If used for a medical condition, we highly recommend using it exactly as prescribed by your doctor. By using it for preventing hair loss during the use of steroids then you only need 1 mg a day. We recommend being extremely careful with it due to the earlier mentioned side effects of Finasteride.

Usually, the administration protocol for hair loss is 1 mg per day. Both for medical needs and for those running steroids.

Those prescribed are using it for as long as the doctor said. Usually, that’s 6-12 months but can be shorter or longer. For prostate enlargement (BPH) only, doctors may prescribe a full 5 mg tablet a day for a period determined by the doctor. If you get it prescribed – tell your doctor about all possible Finasteride side effects.

However, people who run steroids should use Finasteride only for the cycle period. If you get 5 mg tablets, either use them less frequently than on a daily basis or cut tablets. If you use it during the use of steroids, we highly recommend watching out very closely for the side effects and discontinuing if you start noticing them. Very often, head hair is not worth your health and sexual life.
